Books

Macromedia Authorware 3: Internal Systems Functions Professional Reference, by Joe Ganci. Although this book was published in 1996, it remains useful for anyone wanting to use scripting in Calculation icons.
Macromedia Authorware 4 Authorized, with CD ROM. This book from Macromedia is basically an extended tutorial. If you've never used Authorware, it's OK for learning the basics--but the tutorial that comes with Authorware is just as good, in our opinion.
Macromedia Authorware 4: Using Authorware, by Macromedia Press. The manual provided when a printed documentation version is purchased. It's a good reference if you can obtain one.
Macromedia Authorware 5 Attain: Using Authorware, by Macromedia Press. The manual provided when a printed documentation version is purchased. A good reference, although the material on Knowledge Objects takes a lot of digging and trial-and-error to understand.
Shockwave Power Solutions, N. Rabinowitz and S. Magee. This book is rather dated (1996) and focuses mostly on Director. Shockwave for Authorware has left this material behind.

The Official Guide to Authorware 4 : The Comprehensive Reference from the Multimedia Labs of Macromedia, Nick Roberts (Macromedia Press Series). All of us, (novices and more experienced users) found this book to be useful. We understand that there's an "official guide" to AW5 Attain. I would expect that it is also a good reference for most AW functions. Reviews fault the book for sparse coverage of writing Knowledge Objects—but writing KO's is relatively advanced programming. Without having read the text, I'd recommend it based on the official guide to AW 4.
